Everything You Need to Know Before Hiring a Divorce Lawyer on Long Island, NY
Experienced Long Island Family Law Attorney Robert E. Hornberger, Esq. just published the second edition of his well-received, “Guide to New York Divorce: Everything You Need to Know Before Hiring a Divorce Lawyer”. The new book has been completely revised to reflect changes in New York divorce law and includes an entirely new chapter including a fictitious case study demonstrating how the principles in the book would be used in an actual divorce case.
“We revised the book due to popular demand,” author and divorce lawyer Hornberger said. “And because changes in New York state family law made revision necessary.”
The first edition of the book, which was published in 2015, has been downloaded hundreds of times.
“We are pleased that we were able to help hundreds of Long Islanders navigate the sometimes scary and confusing waters of divorce law,” Hornberger said. “We reviewed every word of the prior edition and updated it where necessary to ensure that the book reflects the current state of divorce law in New York.”
The eBook, “Guide to New York Divorce: What You Need to Know Before Hiring a Divorce Lawyer in New York” is intended to take the mystery and fear out of the often difficult process of divorce so that couples can make the best decisions for themselves and their families. Rather than charge for what is truly a valuable resource for couples considering divorce, Hornberger has made the guide available as a complimentary download here.
“The clients I meet are all understandably distraught at the prospect of going through a divorce,” Hornberger said. “Even when they want the divorce, it’s still an emotional experience and there’s so much confusion and misinformation out there. I wrote this book to help people who may be considering divorce in New York understand what they’re getting into. When they download the book, they can read it at their leisure from the comfort and convenience of their own home, before they ever set foot in a divorce lawyer’s office.”
The eBook covers the most important issues anyone on Long Island considering divorce in New York will have to tackle. A glance at the Table of Contents of the eBook demonstrates the comprehensive nature of this guide. Far from a “sales pitch” for the divorce attorney’s firm, the first chapter, “How to Know if It’s Time for a Divorce” advises Long Island couples with suggestions of methods to help repair their relationships before concluding their marriages are irreparable; while the final chapter, “How Do I Move On & Enjoy a Healthy Life After My Long Island Divorce?” offers hope for life after divorce and offers tips and techniques for individuals getting on with their lives after divorce in a healthy and happy way.
New to the book is Chapter 11, Long Island Divorce Case Study / Example. This chapter presents the divorce case of a fictitious Jane and John, and how issues previously described in the book, like Equitable Distribution of Assets, Child Custody and Visitation, Child Support and Spousal Maintenance, would be handled in a courtroom in Long Island, NY.
In between the first and last are all-inclusive chapters covering all the pertinent information couples need to know when they are going through a divorce on Long Island. Topics covered include:
- Divorce or Legal Separation: Which is Right for Me? (What is Legal Separation?, Support Implications, What is a Divorce?)
- Grounds for Divorce (Cruel & Inhuman Treatment, Abandonment, Adultery, Living Separate, Irretrievable Breakdown)
- How to Find the Right Divorce Lawyer (Goals, Liking Your Attorney, Costs, How to Get the Names of Respected Attorneys in Your Area, The Law, Free Consultations)
- Child Custody (Options, How to Get Custody, Factors Courts Use to Decide Custody, Different Types of Custody Arrangements, Sole Legal, Joint Legal, Sole Physical, Joint Physical or Shared Custody, Parenting Time & Holidays)

- Spousal Maintenance (Alimony, Spousal Support, Temporary Spousal Maintenance, Post-Divorce Spousal Maintenance)
- Equitable Distribution (Marital Property, Marital Debt )
- What Other Options Do You Have to End Your Marriage? (Divorce Mediation, Collaborative Divorce).
“It’s difficult for anybody to absorb all the information they need to know sitting in a divorce lawyer’s office, particularly when they’re in emotional turmoil,” Hornberger said. “My hope is that, after reading the book, when they visit me they’ll know what to expect and be more relaxed and able to make the best decisions for them and their family.”
