What Should I Do If My Ex Is Spying On Me In NY?

Your ex may stalk you or spy on you after your divorce in an attempt to regain control over you or punish you for the separation. If you have custody of your children or are getting alimony or spousal support, your ex may be spying on you to gain information that they can later use against you to have spousal support or custody revoked. Here’s what you can do if you catch your ex spying on you and how to get help from an experienced Long Island divorce attorney.

Block Your Ex On All Accounts

First and foremost, you should block your ex or delete them on every account you know they may have access to. If need be, delete your own accounts and create new ones that your ex does not know you have. Do this with social media accounts, bank accounts, online shopping accounts, and any other type of account you may have together or that your ex may know you have.

Consider sticking to social media profiles that don’t use photographs or video, and use a screen name or username that your ex has never known to be associated with you. Don’t follow people you know in real life – your ex can look at your friends and connect the dots that it’s you. Avoid posting details about your life that could be associated with you or that only you would know, and don’t post pictures in locations that your ex may correlate to you, even if you aren’t in the photograph.

Do Not Answer Calls, Texts, or Emails

If you haven’t stopped taking calls or answering texts and emails from your ex, now is the time. You should also decline to accept gifts sent by your ex. Don’t return them or send them back to your ex either – you should simply throw them away. Your ex may be able to find other ways to watch you, but eliminating these routes first is a great start.

Consider Breaking Up with Your Friends Too

If you have mutual friends with your ex, consider leaving these relationships too. It may be impossible for your friends to choose between you and your ex and they may believe they don’t have to. Even if you trust your friends implicitly, they may unknowingly betray you by giving what they think is “harmless” information to your ex. You are much better off by distancing yourself completely from any friends you share with your ex and making new friendships with people who don’t know and have never met your ex.

Find Different Places To Go

As frustrating as it is to have to leave places you like and find different places to shop, eat, or go to the gym, it can quickly stop your ex from spying on you. Even if you haven’t seen your ex at any of the places you frequent, they may still be lurking there in disguise or may have even set up cameras.

Consider switching grocery stores and gyms, and start shopping online instead of in-store. Drive out of town to go to the mall or movie theater and try not to go anywhere you used to go with your ex if you can help it. If you have to go somewhere they know you might be, try to go at a time when they are least likely to be there. For example, if they are a late sleeper, you could start running your most important errands in the morning when they are less likely to be awake and out.
