A Team Built Around Experience, Preparation, and Personal Attention
Since opening its doors in 2006, Hornberger Verbitsky, P.C. has grown from a small family law practice into a team representing clients throughout Long Island in matters ranging from straightforward uncontested divorces to complex financial litigation involving business owners, professionals, and high-net-worth families.
Every case begins the same way, not with legal documents, but with a conversation.
Some people contact us before anyone has filed for divorce. Others arrive after receiving court papers. Some are trying to preserve a parenting relationship. Others are concerned about a closely held business, retirement accounts, or significant marital assets. We have also met with clients who ultimately decided not to file for divorce at all. Sometimes the most valuable outcome of an initial consultation is a clearer understanding of the available options rather than an immediate legal decision.
Different circumstances call for different legal strategies, which is why every representation begins with understanding the client’s goals before discussing legal options.
That reality has shaped the way Hornberger Verbitsky, P.C. has represented Nassau County and Suffolk County families since the firm was founded. Rather than approaching every case with a predetermined strategy, our attorneys begin by understanding the client’s priorities, the legal issues involved, and the practical challenges that may lie ahead. The goal is not simply to move a case through the court system. It is to help each client make informed decisions at every stage of the process.
Family law differs from many other areas of legal practice. Clients are making decisions that affect their children, homes, businesses, retirement, and future relationships. The work requires legal knowledge, certainly, but also patience, communication, and the ability to help people navigate difficult decisions during emotionally challenging periods of their lives. That responsibility is one the attorneys at Hornberger Verbitsky, P.C. take seriously every day.
From the beginning, the firm’s objective has remained consistent: to help Long Island families navigate divorce and family law matters with practical advice, thoughtful preparation, and experienced legal representation. Today, our attorneys represent clients throughout Nassau County and Suffolk County in matters ranging from uncontested divorce and mediation to contested custody disputes, equitable distribution, high-net-worth divorce, and other complex family law matters. Some cases are resolved through negotiation or mediation. Others require litigation. The appropriate strategy depends on the circumstances, not on a predetermined formula.
Behind every matter is a team of attorneys and legal professionals committed to communication, preparation, and responsive client service. While each attorney brings individual experience and perspective to the practice, collaboration is an important part of how we serve our clients. Complex financial matters, evolving legal issues, and difficult parenting disputes often benefit from the collective experience of the firm’s attorneys, allowing clients to receive thoughtful guidance from a team that works together toward a common objective.

Our Approach to Divorce and Family Law
People sometimes ask whether we encourage settlement or prefer litigation.
We do not begin by deciding whether a case should settle or proceed to trial. The appropriate approach depends on the issues involved and the client’s goals. One day may involve helping parents develop a workable parenting schedule after separation. Another may require analyzing business valuation reports, executive compensation packages, or competing opinions from financial experts. Some clients seek guidance before filing for divorce. Others come to us after litigation has already begun or when circumstances require modification of an existing court order.
We do not measure success by whether a case settles or proceeds to trial. Success is measured by whether the result protects the client’s interests and positions them well for the future.
Some matters are resolved through thoughtful negotiation because both parties are committed to reaching an agreement. Others benefit from mediation or collaborative approaches that allow families to maintain greater control over important decisions. There are also situations where litigation becomes necessary because meaningful agreement simply is not possible.
Rather than beginning with a predetermined strategy, we begin by understanding the circumstances of the case, the issues involved, and what the client hopes to accomplish. That understanding guides every recommendation we make.
This approach also reflects the way our attorneys work together. Although each attorney brings individual experience and perspective to the practice, collaboration is an important part of serving our clients. Complex financial issues, custody disputes, and evolving legal questions often benefit from thoughtful discussion within the firm, allowing clients to draw upon the collective experience of our legal team.
