As a Divorce Lawyer working with Long Island couples for many years, I know that divorce is often a confusing and stressful time that brings along with it many big and difficult decisions for those going through it. The decision of which divorce lawyer to hire is the first of many important decisions you will have to make and will affect all the ones following it. Be sure to explore all your options thoroughly and weigh them carefully.

We’ve provided the following list of some of the most important tips for choosing a qualified divorce lawyer in your area.

Tip 1. Start Researching Long Island Divorce Lawyers Early

Take the time to start researching and considering your options for a divorce lawyer early in the process. Do this as soon as you know that divorce is on the horizon. The process of finding the attorney that is right for you may take a little time. You shouldn’t rush the process if you don’t have to.

Tip 2. Meet with Several Divorce Lawyers Before Making a Decision

You may need to meet with a few attorneys before finding the one that is right for you, so give yourself some time shop around if possible. This will give you a better opportunity to choose the divorce lawyer who listens to your concerns, understands your values, and takes the time to explain your options to you in a way that you understand.

Tip 3. Ask About your Divorce Attorney’s Experience

It is extremely important that you choose a divorce attorney who is experienced in Matrimonial Law and Divorce Law. When you attend your first consultation, ask the attorney if he or she mainly practices in these areas. This is important for a number of reasons. First, attorneys that practice divorce law exclusively are likely to be thoroughly aware and skilled with the latest developments in the laws and procedures regarding divorce. Further, if the attorney practices divorce law day in and day out, he or she will likely be far more efficient, as handling divorces is part of his/her daily routine and will not require additional research or additional time drafting routine documents. This can save you time and money on your divorce.

In addition, it is important to know whether your attorney is accustomed to litigation or is more geared toward settlement. Make sure that your attorney understands your goals and will work to achieve your desired outcome.

Finally, be sure to ask about whether the attorney has handled cases similar to yours. Particularly if yours is a unique situation, you should feel assured that your attorney is knowledgeable and experienced enough to handle your case.

Tip 4. Make Sure your Attorney is the Right Fit

Your relationship with your divorce attorney is a kind of partnership, and it will last throughout your divorce for better or for worse. It is important to find an attorney that you can have a positive working relationship with, with whom who you can communicate easily and comfortably, and who listens to your concerns and understands your goals. You should feel comfortable speaking with your attorney and confident in his or her abilities.

Tip 5. Quality Legal Representation Should Not Be “Cheap”

You get what you pay for. This is true in many aspects of life and is certain when it comes to choosing a divorce lawyer. Any promise of a “cheap” divorce may indicate that the work the attorney is doing is for some reason or another not valuable. Divorce lawyers offer a valuable service. They help protect your interests in valuable assets and your finances, as well as your concerns about your children’s custody and visitation. These are no small matters, and deserve full time and attention. Particularly if your divorce is “contested” (you and your spouse do not agree on the terms of the divorce), it is unlikely that your divorce can be both “cheap” and end on what you feel are successful terms. If an attorney does promise you cheap and effective representation, it would be wise to proceed with caution.
